Ik mompelde "navond" tegen de man, en deze begroette dit ontmoetingsritueel in gelijkgezinde wijze. Ik keek naar zijn hoofd, wat door anabolen steroiden verbonden zat aan zijn bovenlichaam, het scheen geen nek te hebben. Zow. Ik heb mijn dagelijkse portie paranoia weer gehad. Stap net buiten bij vrienden waar ik op visite was en er rijdt een politieauto langs. En wat misschien een seconde mag zijn geweest speelt in een flits het volgende scenario in mijn hoofd af: De auto stopt, 2 politiemannen stappen uit de auto. "Waarom heb je zo'n PLO-shaal om?", vragen ze me. "Omdat het zo fucking koud is, meneer." is mijn antwoord. "Niet zo brutaal, wat loopt u hier op straat?". "Ik ben op weg naar thuis vanaf een paar vrienden waar ik vanavond gegeten heb". Een van de agenten kijkt op zijn horloge. "Om kwart over elf? Dat is wel een laat etentje.". "Zo bedoel ik het niet, ik ben na het even nog blijven hangen, we hebben nog wat nagepraat en ge-wii'ed." "Nou, dat zal dan wel, maar u loopt hier wel 's avonds laat over straat met een halve gezichtsbedekking zodat wij u niet makkelijk kunnen identificeren, en dat is sinds 27 januari - dat is afgelopen vrijdag - verboden. Wilt u zo vriendelijk zijn zich u bij deze te legitimeren?". "Hier heeft u mijn rijbewijs.". "Ahm. Loerakker, zoals de chocolade?". "Nee meneer, dat is Loacker". "Ach so.", zegt hij spottend.

Hij bekijkt mijn rijbewijs. Wat ik in maart moet vernieuwen omdat het al tien jaar oud is. Hij ziet daar een eind-twintiger, geschoren en lang haar. Hij kijkt mij aan, van de top van mijn toch wel enigszins beginnende tanende kruin, naar mijn baardje en veel kortere haar. "Daar lijkt u niet erg veel meer op, bent u dit wel?" Zijn collega stapt in de politieauto, en brult in de microfoon alsof de afstand de mate bepaalt hoe hard je moet schreeuwen. Die arme man enige communicatiemiddel tot zijn twintigste zal zich beperkt moeten hebben tot twee conservenblikjes en een lang koord. "LOERAKKER! EL OH EEH AH ERRR AH KAH KAH EH ERRR". Na een paar seconden stilte kraakt uit het speakertje: "Ja, is geregistreerd. 1 keer, voor openbare dronkenschap. Doe maar eens een testje op hem." Als een Old Shatterhand zwiept hij een alcoholtester uit zijn holster, spert mijn kaken open, ramt de tester in mijn strot alsof het niets is en zegt: "Blow, scumbag, like you've never blown before...."

Daarna kwam ik mijn straat in, en een auto die geparkeerd stond in een van de parkeerhavens seinde naar me, dus ik dacht dat het een van mijn buren was en zwaaide vriendelijk terug en liep door. Even later toen ik aan mijn deur zat te prutsen om hem open te krijgen kwam er een busje aanrijden, seinde naar de geparkeerde auto en reden samen een stukje verder.

When using the Log4perl module from CPAN I ran into an issue where I encountered logged data containing "[undef]:[undef]" in it. Assuming I was not the first one having this problem I started my web browser and searched for the literal string using Google. To my surprise it didn't return the results I was expecting, as you can see in the screenshots in this post. A bit more tweaking the search parameters led me to a link that had the exact string, but it Google preferred other sites that didn't have the EXACT text. When I opened the page where you can add more parameters it suddenly showed that when I express an exact string of "[undef]:[undef]" it removes the non-alphanumeric characters. Google, this is NOT what I define as EXACT SEARCH, and makes searching for specific strings a major pain in the ass. Can you please change the exact search back to what it was supposed to do, like Google Codesearch?

I'm learning programming in Haskell, and Project Euler (http://projecteuler.net/) is a good way to have some programming exercises. Here's my Haskell solution for Project Euler problem #2 "Find the sum of all the even-valued terms in the Fibonacci sequence which do not exceed four million."

Today I received an email from Microsoft that Microsoft Live Mesh beta will be discontinued, and that I will need to install the new Live Mesh.

To deliver a better product for all our customers, we combined several services into a new product called Windows Live Mesh. Windows Live Mesh has several performance and reliability improvements compared to the Live Mesh beta, and with Windows Live Mesh, you can also sync your program settings for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office.

"The King is dead, long live the new King"?

Couldn't they just announce that the beta stage has ended and you need to update the Live Mesh software to continue using it? So I followed the link to the website, where I am greeted with the dialog that the new Live Mesh will only work on Windows Vista or Windows 7, but not Windows XP. I'm still using Windows XP, so pretty soon Live Mesh will become unusable for me. *sigh*

Note: Windows Live Mesh is available only for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Mac OS X version 10.5 or later.

Lucky enough they refer in the mail to another service Microsoft offers, called SkyDrive, so I went to look there. I have 5gb free space of the 5gb total that Skydrive.

Here's another page viewing my Skydrive properties. Now I suddenly have 25gb available for storage, of which I've used approximately 5gb!

What's not mentioned in the email I've received is that there is a web interface to Windows Live Mesh as well that I could use to download the files instead of having to resort to using a Windows Vista or 7 machine with Live Essentials (which are not so essential for me).

Things were so much easier when Foldershare was still a separate entity and not part of the Microsoft mammoth... *sigh*
